We loved the accommodation and the site. It is the ideal location for a holiday in the Forest of Dean. We went out walking every day and returned to sleep and relax in the peaceful cottage. Thanks for a great holiday.

Tips:

We did not really visit any of the local eating places, but we had a fabulous day out at Puzzlewood which was so interesting.

Fantastic stay in very clean and comfortable cottage. Very dog friendly and a great location to get around the walks of the Forest of Dean. Very friendly and unobtrusive welcome

The Beechenhurst Cafe is a great place to get coffee snacks, lunches and is very reasonably priced. You can make it a really good stopping off point along a lot of good walks

We had an excellent stay. Cottage was well equiped, and very clean. Ideally placed on the edge of the forest, we found the cottage ideally placed to visit a number of surrounding sites of interest. We also got to see some of the wild deer in the adjacent forest.

Tips:

Tintern and its Abbey well worth a visit.

Friendly welcome and a nice touch with the welcome pack of some tea, coffee and milk. Also liked the idea of the doggy box another lovely touch. The Forest area was perfect for a stroll in the mornings with our dog and was great to see the deer.

Tips:

We thought this was nice and central to places we wanted to visit. Symonds Yat is a must. We also visited Ross-on Wye, Monmouth and Gloucester.

5th March 2019:

The cottages are clean, comfortable and warm, really well equipped. The whole site was well maintained and clean, in a fantastic quiet location. We hired all the cottages and a small function room for the weekend. Booking and checking in was efficient and freindly and made organising our family birthday reunion of 44 people and 4 dogs a lot easier.

Tips:

We enjoyed, playing in the adjacent woods. Sunday lunch at the nags head was really good a massive choice of veg and desserts. For our party on Saturday night we booked a hog roast from the forest of Dean hog roast company, this was great

27th February 2019:

Superbly appointed and cosy little cottage. We had all the comforts of home. It was warm and snug. In a very quiet location ( that may have been partly because it was not high season). The beds were comfortable and the linen was provided. The power shower was good , endless hot water and fluffy towels and hairdryer provided. The place was immaculately clean. The owners also provided washing up equipment , a welcome pack of tea/coffee and a pint of milk in the fridge. Fabulous. I would definitely stay here again.

Tips:

Puzzle wood is really atmospheric but can get quite busy especially in school holidays. We did the sculpture trail in the Forest of Dean. The Forest was lovely but we were underwhelmed with the sculptures ( maybe we’re not arty enough). Goodrich Castle has superb views on a sunny day. If you’re looking for something to occupy the kids. There is Krazy Golf next door to Taurus Crafts in Lydney. You get a day pass and they can play as many rounds of golf as well as table-tennis, air hockey and pool. Great value and kept us busy for longer than the park at Symmonds Yat.

19th February 2019:

The cottage was spotless and very pleasant, basic but equipped with everything you needed. Great location with plenty of local attractions and places to explore. John and Elaine are very friendly and hospitable. We had an excellent 3 nights away and have said it's been very good value for money. Will definitely be back to stay again or even just head over for a day out in the forest

Tips:

Use Lidney for all your shopping. Puzzlewood and the birds of prey centre is well worth a visit, you can spend a whole day there. Look at the local guides for places to walk, there are some good trails which are not too long (couple of miles). Also be sure to visit Symonds Yat, the walks and view are amazing. Driving around can be interesting if your relying on sat nav, ours took us on some interesting journeys down very narrow tracks through the countryside but still enjoyable

The cottage just needed a bit more crockery, there were only two of some things which meant we had to wash up after using something straight away. The shower also had no pressure, an electric shower would be better. Loved the access to the forest and the open plan layout of the cottage, great for our little girl.

Tips:

The woodman Inn has great food and friendly staff and only a five minute drive, ships nearby and good for the railway, Tintern and Chepstow castle.

16th August 2018:

We enjoyed a short stay in Tigs cottage. We were part of a family group and my sister stayed in Ivy Cottage next door, which was great. The cottages were spotlessly clean, comfortable and well equipped. Only tiny problem was our picnic bench out the front of the cottage was very wobbly and didn’t feel safe, but that was it! My son has a thing for all things farming related and was absolutely thrilled to see a combine harvester working in the field right next to us!! That made his holiday! There’s great access straight into the forest which was brilliant for walking the dogs. I understand from another holidaymaker that there was a secure field for dog walking down through the campsite, but I didn’t go there. The kids play area is a great space and the boys used it a lot, playing football with friends they’d made. We also used the secure bike shed to lock their bikes away at night.

Tips:

We visited Forestry commission places nearby as we had dogs and we found a lot of the local attractions aren’t particularly dog friendly. So we would definitely recommend Beechenhurst Lodge and Wenchford picnic site. Beechenhurst Lodge was a short drive away has a ‘Go Ape’, Highway Rat adventure trail as well as other lovely woody walks and would be great place to take and ride bikes. When we stayed a day ticket in the car park was £5.50. Great value. We did an online shop and had a delivery from a local supermarket which arrived as we did. Lydney has a good choice of shops. We had fish and chips one night from the chippy which were very nice. We unfortunately had to visit the minor injuries clinic in Lydney but were pleased with the treatment.

This was a lovely site with very clean properties and welcoming owners. We took our 4 cavalier King Charles spaniels who were very comfortable. There were good walks for them all around. There was a lovely young children's play park which my friend's children used and enjoyed. There is absolutely nothing to complain about; we had a lovely time! I would thoroughly recommend and I am hoping to return in the future.

We had a comfortable short break at the cottages with our two little children. The cottage was adequately equipped with all the essentials things in the kitchen. There is an on-site laundry and outdoor rack / pipe provided which will come in handy after a walk or cycle ride in the forest. The cottage is well sited just at the footstep of the forest itself, though we couldn’t do the walks secondary to the weather.

Tips:

Great Wall Chinese Peking & Cantonese Cuisine in Lydney was an excellent takeaway. Plenty of castles to visit, Goodrich, Chepstow, Usk and Raglan. We visited Tintern Abbey and walked the Sculpture Trail. Symonds Yat Rock has a fabulous viewing point across the valley. Always a great place to stay, very clean, everything you need in a self catering cottage and lovely friendly owner. We use it as a base not only for all the local activities and sites but for places up to 2 hours away so after busy days the cottage is a very quite and homely place to return to and relax. Since our first visit four years ago we have booked each October and would not consider staying anywhere else in the Forest of Dean. Home from Home

Tips:

Had a brilliant meal at the Nags Head.. Don’t let the tired building put you off as food is excellent. Heritage Centre is a must to lean about life in the F of D. 22nd October 2017:

The cottages are in an idyllic, tranquil setting. I stayed in Forge Cottage which had two spacious bedrooms and an open plan kitchen and lounge. The standard of cleanliness is excellent. Pristine is a better description. Cottage was fully equipped with everything in its place. Central heating was excellent but the cottage was so cosy that there was little need to use it. Elaine was very welcoming and very honest about the five minute delay in accessing the cottage. She was visible throughout our stay and responded very quickly to requests. I would have no hesitation in recommending these cottages- you will not be disappointed.

Tips:

Yorkley is well placed to tour this whole area. Dip into Wales, cross over to the Cotswolds. Being close to Herefordshire it is a great opportunity to visit a cider farm I visited WESTONS and sampled a few varieties before buying. The assistant was extremely knowledgeable and helpful This while area is a tourist's dream with do many attractions close by.

This has to be the nicest place we have ever stayed. Everything had been thought of from a pint of milk on arrival (which was perfect after a long journey) to a doggy box with all the essentials. The beds were so comfortable and the cottage was very warm and cosy. The location is a perfect base for exploring the Forest of Dean. The free washing machine was a god send after some very wet and muddy days spend in the forest and the hose was used regularly to wash down our dogs and our boots. Absolutely perfect relaxing break, Thank you for having us.

Very welcoming staff on arrival. Very relaxed atmosphere. The cottage (Squirrels) was spacious, clean, well equipped and comfortable. The only real down side was the lack of privacy at times, as people walked past from the car park. Bit like being in a goldfish bowl. This could be remedied with blinds I think.

Tips:

The Forest is a fabulous place to visit. A real must is of course Puzzlewood, as well as the Dean Heritage Museum and going down the mine at Hopewell Colliery, where the food is really good value in both places. (Lovely Sunday lunch as Dean Heritage) We love nature, so the Sculpture Walk, Soudley and Cannop Ponds and a trip to Symonds Yat (with fabulous views over the Wye) are all well worth it. Littledean Prison Exhibition of Crime was very much "adults only" and is quite an experience, quite macabre in many ways. Lydney Harbour with views over the Severn and the Bridge is great too. For anyone who wants to venture further, a day trip to Ledbury and Eastnor Castle via Ross is really good, and of course Tintern and Monmouth.

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay and for letting us know about some minor problems in Swallow Cottage. I have passed the list on to John and he will get them checked out & sorted. The best thing to do if you find any little thing is to let us know at the time - we then have the opportunity to put it right there and then, or if you'd rather we didn't, then at least before the next guests arrive. We were recommended by neighbours in our village and we were not disappointed. Rained our first two days so having an area in the laundry to hang wet clothes was brilliant. Plenty of seating outside which we used in the second half of the week. Loved the easy access into the forest, and plenty of poo bins around which was appreciated. The dog enjoyed the stay even learned quite quickly which cottage was ours.

Tips:

Book in the cottage was useful for telling us about the local pubs who serve food. We picked up other leaflets from the local area. It's an excellent location for visiting all areas. Train service from Lydney is quite good I understand if you want to go up to Gloucester or Cheltenham, or to Wales in the other direction. Lydney docks was a very interesting visit. The staff are lovely and what a fabulous location right on the edge of the forest. Highly recommend it, really good location to visit so many locations within a reasonable distance.

Tips:

Puzzle wood is a must Lovely ancient forest and this time we took our grandchildren, 8 and 4 and they loved it.

Bridle Cottage was a very comfortable and clean cottage.but note to the owners-the television needs to be upgraded to a larger screen and bedside lights would be nice or put a longer string on the lights above the bed so you do not need to get out of bed to put the light out.

Great place to stay with kids. My 2 really enjoyed it. Only 2 things I would say could be better...the oven isn't great. It took over 45 mins to cook fish fingers and chips. The mattress nearest the window is so hard and uncomfortable.

Tips:

There are lots to do and see in the forest. Caves, the forest, steam train rides it's brilliant. For eating you really need to search for somewhere before you go, lots of the pubs etc.. do not open for evening meals until 6pm some 6.30pm. This isn't great for kids!

We really enjoyed our stay. The location of the cottage was perfect, with everything that we wanted to do a short distance away. The cottage itself was spot on. It was very clean and well appointed. There were lots of unexpected, but very welcome, extras e.g. milk in the fridge, welcome pack and use of barbecues. Thank you.

Tips:

Our children loved the play area on site. Chepstow castle is worth a visit and the cycle routes in the forest are great. Jimmy's Kitchen in Lydney did good Chinese food.

Absolutely loved my break at Tiggs Cottage. Lovely welcome from Elaine the owner. First impressions of cottage was wow !! I have stayed in many dog friendly places but, none as clean, cosy and comfortable as this one. The cottage had everything that you would need. I even had milk, coffee and tea awaiting my arrival. Brilliant to refresh yourself after the journey there. My two dogs had a welcome pack too.. Thank you so much Elaine. Can't wait to come back !!!

Lots of footpaths through the forest which is accessible from just outside the cottage. Myself and dogs loved it.

I am loathed to recommend not because of any issues with any element of Deanwood but because it is becomming increasingly difficult to book. It is a beautiful location, clean welcoming and very well equipped cottages. It is quiet and there is limited internet/phone signal...bliss. Elaine and John are brilliant hosts who are around when needed but not at all invasive. I have repeatedly given Deanwood 10/10 for everything.

Tips:

The Nags Head does a great Sunday roast, good food generally. The woodman inn, parkend serves excellent food and is well worth several visits. Symonds Yat is stunning, if you want to eat after a long walk avoid the Old Court Hotel, food, service and general cleanliness left much to be desired. 365 Steps, lower wyndcliff forest, stunning but scary climb, we tried it with 2 dogs not safe for 4 legged ones. So many beautiful dog friendly places to visit.

We've stayed in lots of places over the years but have to say this was one of the best. So warm, comfortable, clean. Tips:

Spoilt for choice for places to go but being as we were there such a short time chose the Heritage centre in the Forest (can't remember the name of it) not far from Deanwood. Excellent place to take the children and the cafe was good too.

We stayed in Sunrise cottage in early November. When we arrived, we were welcomed by Elaine, shown the cottage which was clean and warm. The bike shed was good and secure. Since it was late season and term time, it was very peaceful and quiet. I am hoping to go again next year.

Tips:

We went for walks in the woods which are right by the site, out the back gate and short drives took us to lots of other lovely walks - the autumn colours were beautiful. We didn't eat out. We only aimed to go walking and cycling rather than visiting attractions. If you do the Sculpture Trail, be warned that the way markers are not very helpful - we got lost!

It's an average place and decent value for money - our main issue was the washbasin having separate hot and cold water and hence it being very difficult to use it since either it's too cold or too hot. There are quite a few cottages on the premises, which was nice for the kids, since there were other children to play with.

A lovely week in a comfortable cottage with everything we needed. The whole site is spotlessly clean and really well-kept. The dogs enjoyed having the enclosed garden, they loved the safe field to play in and walks in the forest. We all had a very relaxing time in lovely, peaceful surroundings.

Tips:

Dog friendly pubs - The Nag's Head and The Rising Sun very welcoming. We had a really good meal at The Fountain. Visit to Symond's Yat worthwhile, although we found it better to park at the top (the Rock) and walk down to the river as the car park at Symond's Yat East was really busy.

This may be a small thing but baring in mind that the squirrels appears to me made to accommodate people with mobility limitations, the sofa was quite low to get in and out of and the taps were quite awkward to turn on and off. This was not a major problem for us but might be for someone with disabilities. Otherwise we could not fault it. Oh appart from the dissapointing Wi-Fi.

Tips:

Don't go to The Nags Head ona Saturday expecting to get food as it is their bingo night. They did put themsleves out to provide us with a light meal even so .. Very nice food and heaps of it at The Woodman at Parkend, slightly more expesive but very good. Also very freindly. If you are going to use the forrestry commision car parks a lot its worth getting a £10 ticket for the week. Also if you pay for a ticket at one F C carpark you can use it in other F C carparks on the same day.

Owner Response:

Thank you for your helpful comments. We will certainly bear in mind about the height of the sofa and the taps when we change them. Regarding the Wifi we have been waiting for BT / OpenReach to install fibre to the property since July 2015! The latest is they need to put up a new telegraph pole ...... Hopefully it will soon actually happen and then we will be in a position to privide a good Wifi connection to all the cottages.

the only possible downside to location for us is that we are not particularly good walkers and the location was not near any amenities, but that's our problem - we were able to drive to many excellent places to eat and the surroundings were beautiful and so location did not really cause any concerns. everything else was exceptional

Tips:

The White Hart on the way to Gloucester and the Nags Head in Yorkely were very different but both really good in their own ways, the food in both was good for different reasons, The Fountain at Parkend looked good but we went in the wrong time for food, if we come again we will certainly try it. Tintern Abbey is a must. Roads really good so drinving to Bristol, Chepstow, Gloucestrer, Cardiff really pleasant and once there worth the journey.

Coachmans Cottage seems quite small at first sight but actually it's very comfortable! It contains everything you need and even when we had friends visit for a bite of supper, we didn't feel overcrowded with eight of us in the kitchen/ living room. The cottage was spotlessly clean, the welcome warm and friendly and the area absolutely breathtaking.

Tips:

Don't miss Aunt Marthas - it's off the beaten track but well worth hunting out! Also highly recommended the International Centre for Birds Of Prey and, for something more unusual, The Mechanical Music Museum. (http://www.mechanicalmusic.co.uk)

26th July 2016:

We have stayed in a variety of cottages in the UK, Ireland and in France. We found Foxes Cottage to be exceptionally clean and well equipped. This was the first time we have not been charged extra for bed linen/towels, laundry facilities and cleaning service upon leaving. We very much appreciated these. I was also pleasantly surprised by Elaine's kind response to my son getting sick and the extra cleaning that was required, done without fuss or extra charge. We all agree we wold love to come back again.

Tips:

Clearwell Caves and the Dean Heritage Centre were fascinating and the staff friendly and informative. The Palace Cinema in Cinderford is worth visiting for the Edwardian architecture and the fact that a family ticket for 4 was only £10. Symonds Yat is beautiful and has lots of wildlife to see including the nesting Peregrine Falcons. Most of all we loved the walking and cycling. There were so many trails to explore. We walked somewhere new each time and explored both the Family Cycle route (12 miles and well signposted)and the Forest Explorer route (16 miles but not well posted).

26th July 2016:

Stayed 4 nights in this small cottage on the 'entrance' to the Forest of Dean, which was very convenient. Cottage was clean (rather fussy with that!), it served my personal purpose for a couple of days as I travelled alone - however, it's rather basic and only equipped with the bare necessities, no extras. 1/2 pint of milk in fridge which was very helpful. Additionally, it wasn't as secluded as I had hoped as it's situated on a campsite and forms part of 13 cottages on the owners' 'farm'/estate. Became busy as the weekend approached. Elaine and John were very helpful with various enquiries. One last point - which drove me to 'despair' in the end (unfortunately, I needed to work as well whilst staying): the wifi is literally non-existent and many places locally were the same!

Tips:

Explored the area extensively, not much in terms of real 'gems' when it came to good pubs, but do visit the 'Miners Arms', Whitcroft, and the 'Rising Sun', Moseley Green. Otherwise you'd need to go further afield (Chepstow, Gloucester etc) for not only a better variety but good restaurants, pubs, music, etc.

The late advice regarding arrival time was not appreciated, as was even less the departure time, only known to us, (and thus any other guests) upon arrival. Please do not tell me that I could have asked! The free facilities, ie laundry etc are an excellent touch, and I applaud recycling and waste disposal efforts. You could perhaps have a look at the public loos as your next project. Good luck to you for your efforts; we have visited much worse, but did not realise it was a "resort" as we booked it late.

Tips:

Go out into the forest early, say sixish. Take a left through the gate and look for the animal track from the hole in the fence. First morning there on my walk I did this, and saw a female with two youngsters, and two fairly large males; no tusks, but wild boar they were. Went back with my camera three mornings. I did, they didn,t. Good luck. Sunset? Sunrise pub, as per brochure info, good, but others iffy.

Regarding arrival time (from 4pm) and departure time (by 10am) these times were in the email confirmation that was sent at the time the booking was made, as sent to all our guests when they book. It is necessary for us to have this period of time between guests departing and new guests arriving to ensure that the cottage is thoroughly cleaned and also to leave time for any maintenance or repair work that may need to be carried out.

John and Elaine were friendly and extremely helpful ( especially when I had a problem with my car)! The site is immaculate and bridle cottage contained everything that you could need. Tips:

There is a short walk book for the forest of dean, which includes a really nice walk around lydney docks. Lydney docks is definitely worth a visit. Also Taurus crafts and Lydney Park Estate gardens are beautiful this time of year. The Miners at Whitecroft did a really nice Sunday Lunch, also the White Hart at Broadoak does good food and has stunning views over the Severn. Excellent accommadation. Beautiful grounds. very clean and comfortable. Friendly staff. Loved our stay!! Will be back

Tips:

You do need to have a car, but the local attractions arent too far. The nags head is rather outdated but lovely food at resonable prices and a good atmosphere. The rising Sun and the Woodman are two nice and friendly pubs.

Regular visitors & we always stay in Coachmans Cottage. The cottage & holiday experience is perfect in every way for our needs - a beautifully clean, comfortable & dog friendly cottage in a wonderful location, surrounded by fabulous scenery. Easy access by car to numerous places of interest. Always a joy to visit not least because of the welcoming & efficient management of Elaine & John

Had a great stay, cottage immaculately clean and well equipped with everything we needed. Great location for walking in the forest. Lots of information in the cottage of local things to do and a very comfy bed and great TV. wifi a bonus.

Tips:

Taurus crafts about ten minutes away has a lovely cafe, lots of shops and take away options in lyndney. Sheep always running in roads nearby, lovely to see.

16th February 2016:

We always have a lovely time here, the dogs feel very at home here and the cottage is always immaculately clean. The secure garden is perfect for us and the owners really go to great lengths to try and make our stay comfortable and enjoyable. Our only comment, which is just for the benefit of the business is - we sometimes struggle to get hot water in the shower upstairs. Downstairs taps seem to have plenty hot water but the shower can be tempremental. Other than this we always enjoy our stay and hope to be back again and again!

Tips:

The Ostrich inn at Newland is a fantastic pub for an evening meal. Both the post office in Yorkley and the shop in Parkend are great little shops, they have everything you could need for a short break. And also offer great local eggs, bacon etc.

The only comment we could make is that the shower is very weak not much water comes out for showering. Ideal for us between Cardiff uni and Bristol uni for visiting grandchildren, so it is more than likely to return. Many thanks

5th January 2016:

The cottages were well equipped and the beds were comfy. Lovely to find some fresh milk and a dog towel! My only criticism would be that the shower was inadequate and having a bathroom downstairs with three young children was not ideal.

Tips:

We had a wonderful dinner at The Nag's Inn in the nearby village. Would highly recommend for a friendly and warm welcome.

3rd January 2016:

Clean, welcoming cottage. Good to have so many light possibilities in both sitting room and bedroom, so could read etc with good light. Very comfortable bed and good shower. Over-sensitive smoke alarm, and toaster which over-did toast on even lowest setting (setting off alarm daily!) Erratic wifi. But a great place to stay, would recommend.

Was even better than I anticipated. Genuine warm welcome and considerate owners. More basic supplies in apartment than expected washing up liquid, tea towels, towels, hair dryer, etc.

Tips:

Two shops in Yorkley and short drive to Lydney for larger selection. Had lunch at Taurus Crafts hot, tasty meal, delicious cakes.

30th December 2015:

We were in the middle of house purchase and we found that everyone concerned with Deanwood holiday cottages were always prepared to go that extra yard for us during our stay from 9/12 until 25/12/15. It was great to have somewhere warm clean to return to each evening.

Tips:

This did not really concern us as we are local.
